Our Solutions Are In Nature

“ The future of the Indian people hinges on biodiversity. Without considering  it and harnessing it, we just cannot survive
- says Uma Ramakrishnan
(National Centre for Biological Sciences)

Biodiversity is an element of human well being, like social cohesion, happiness, and connection to nature. The current level of poverty, hunger, increase in the frequency of calamities, disaster, pandemic, water scarcity call for an urgent action to improve human well being. Following the approach of achieving a robust state of human well being that leads to the preservation of biodiversity is needed instead of the immediate pursuit of minimal human well being that allows for further losses in biodiversity, that in turn, leads to a further decline in human well being. Biodiversity must be a central feature of sustainable development as there appears to be circularity in biodiversity conservation to improve human well being and finding a solution for pandemics.

Microbes, plants, and animals enable researches to understand human physiology and treat disease as well as many synthetic drugs are inspired by nature i.e. 70% of cancers drugs are inspired by nature. Four billion people rely on natural medicine.

In India, more than 60% depend on nature to earn their livelihood through farming, fishing, forestry, and other nature-based activity.

Considering the current COVID-19 pandemic and shielding ourselves against subsequent threats require a clear commitment to the management of nature and biodiversity.

In a country with more than one billion people aspiring to an annual economic growth rate of 9-10 percent, how we can leverage from biodiversity?

It is important to develop or understand the link between biodiversity (i.e. genes, traits, species) and human well being (i.e. health, security, wealth). It is imperative to have sound knowledge in the present time about the variability between the species, within the species, and about the ecosystem that houses them – ocean, forests, mountains, coral reefs, etc.

Overall, I Neha Gupta, feel pride that India is bestowed with distinctive and an extensive amount of biodiversity that sustains many of our economic endeavours, and provide aesthetic cultural and spiritual values.
